S & D Garritt Ltd provide independent, pragmatic and technically accurate acoustic consultancy services for a wide range of projects and sectors. Our work includes Noise Impact Assessments, noise surveys, acoustic surveys, acoustic design, sound insulation testing and specialist acoustic advice for planning, design development, feasibility studies and compliance assessment.
We assist with residential, commercial, industrial, entertainment, education and healthcare developments, ranging from single buildings and straightforward assessments to larger multi-plot or multi-use schemes requiring coordination with design teams, planning stakeholders and other consultants.
Experience and professional credentials
S & D Garritt Ltd are members of the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) and were originally incorporated as S.F. Garritt Ltd in 1981. All projects are managed by David Garritt, who has over 25 years’ professional experience in acoustics, including complex developments requiring planning support, mitigation design and technical responses. We are registered with the ANC for sound insulation testing in compliance with The Building Regulations Approved Document E.
David is a full member of the Institute of Acoustics and holds an honours degree in Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering together with a postgraduate diploma in acoustics.
He taught acoustics at postgraduate level for the Institute of Acoustics at Leeds Beckett University between 2010 and 2022, sits on the ANC Communications and PR Committee, is one of their media spokespeople and has authored industry guidance and articles on a wide range of acoustic topics.

We assist with planning, design development, feasibility studies and compliance assessments across residential, commercial, industrial, entertainment, education and healthcare developments. We also provide acoustic consultancy in support of BREEAM credits including Hea 05 and POL 05. Many projects require coordination with wider design teams and planning stakeholders, particularly where environmental noise constraints are significant.

Noise Impact Assessments, noise surveys and acoustic surveys explained
Noise Impact Assessments, noise surveys, noise assessments and acoustic surveys are different terms commonly used to describe closely related areas of acoustic consultancy. The terminology varies depending on project type, sector and planning context, but the underlying work is the expert assessment of noise constraints, impacts, acoustic design and mitigation requirements for new development and existing sites.
In practice, the term Noise Impact Assessment is most commonly used where commercial, industrial, recreational or other non-transport noise sources may affect nearby dwellings or other receptors. The term acoustic survey is often used more broadly, particularly for residential developments affected by transportation noise such as road, rail or aircraft, or where internal criteria, façade design and wider acoustic considerations also need to be addressed.
The terminology may differ, but the essential service remains the same: understanding the acoustic constraints of a site or development and providing clear, proportionate advice on compliance, design and mitigation.
When is a noise survey or acoustic survey required
A noise survey or acoustic survey may be required for a wide range of reasons, including:
• Planning applications for residential, commercial, industrial or mixed-use development
• Assessment of existing or newly proposed noise sources
• Design-stage work to inform layout, façade design, internal building acoustics and any required mitigation measures
• Ongoing acoustic consultancy throughout RIBA design stages
• Feasibility studies for land or property acquisition
• Assessment of operational noise from plant, equipment or activities
Depending on the project, the work may involve environmental noise measurements, BS 4142 assessment, transportation noise assessment, sound insulation design advice, Building Regulations input, BREEAM support or wider acoustic design development.
