Training, Education and CPD
Acoustics often has a reputation as being a rather complicated subject. We have been told before that what we do is black magic – we assure you that it isn’t, but it is a specialised, narrow branch of physics, which keeps us in a job!
We have had the great pleasure of teaching acoustics at a variety of levels to many different people over many years, hopefully proving to them that it isn’t black magic and can be understood to whatever level is relevant to individual needs.
Formal Teaching Contracts
For many years, we had the privilege of teaching the Noise and Vibration Control Engineering (NVCE) module of the Institute of Acoustics post graduate diploma at Leeds Metropolitan University, which became Leeds Beckett University.
Steve Garritt taught the module along with occasional other courses between 1983 and 2010. David Garritt then took over teaching the NVCE module until it became no longer offered at Leeds in 2021.
This gave us a wonderful opportunity to teach and mentor Environmental Health Officers, other acoustic consultants at the start of their career and other professionals who were seeking a specialist qualification in acoustics.
If you have the need for formal teaching in acoustics, please give us a call or send an email and we would be delighted to discuss your requirements and how we can help.
.Continued Professional Development (CPD) and Training Seminars.
We can offer training seminars and CPD in whatever branch of acoustics required, at whatever level of complexity required. We are happy to undertake this for any size of audience and produce teaching material or handouts if required. Some examples of previous training include:
- General guidance, Q&A and training on specific British Standards for Environmental Health Departments at Local Planning Authorities
- Training or CPD sessions for Building Control bodies on parts of the Building Regulations that involve acoustics. Currently this is the well established Approved Document E covering sound insulation between dwellings and flats, or the new Approved Document O that deals with overheating strategy in new build residential properties. David has co-written CPD material issued by the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) .
- Seminars on the Noise at Work Regulations for employees. This has involved teaching a room of employees with no previous qualification (or interest) in acoustics why it is so important that they take care of their hearing, adhere to the Noise at Work requirements and wear appropriate hearing protection properly. It isn’t just red tape!
